LaMa Recycling GmbH, based in Würzburg, Germany, has developed a mechanical recycling process for plastic construction products containing superabsorbent polymers (SAP). According to the company, the process enables composite materials that have previously been difficult to recycle to be converted into recycled plastic pellets. The patent-pending process has reportedly been tested on an industrial scale at a throughput of 200 kg per hour.Technical Approach Superabsorbent polymers are used in applications such as drainage membranes, sealing mats and geotextiles, where they perform water transport and sealing functions. Due to their combination with plastic carrier materials, these products can only be recycled mechanically to a limited extent using conventional methods. The process developed by LaMa Recycling is designed to enable recycling without the superabsorbent polymers interfering with the process. The resulting recycled pellets are intended for reuse in plastic products. Industrial Development Status According to the company, the process has progressed beyond the laboratory stage and can be operated under industrial production conditions. The announcement does not provide details on the specific processing steps, the types of polymers that can be processed, the material properties of the recycled pellets or the processing costs. In addition to construction products, the company sees potential applications for other technical composite materials. Company Formation, Funding and Trade Fair Participation LaMa Recycling was founded on March 13, 2026, by Dr. Lars Helmlinger, Dr. Marieluise Lang and Thomas Wolz. The company is based at the SKZ Plastics Center in Würzburg. According to the company, development of the technology is being supported through the German funding program "EXIST Research Transfer" until mid-2027. LaMa Recycling plans to present its process at Fakuma 2026 at the Bayern Innovativ joint stand. Fakuma 2026 Friedrichshafen, Germany October 12-16, 2026 Hall B5, Stand 5412 More information: |
