Scherdel Wiesauplast: "Hycool" Integrates Cooling Structures into Injection-Molded Plastic Components

(Photo: Scherdel Wiesauplast).
Scherdel Wiesauplast Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG, based in Wiesau, Germany, has developed "Hycool", a thermal management concept in which thermally conductive plastics can replace die-cast aluminum in cooling components. The technology takes advantage of the design flexibility and integration capabilities of injection molding to combine multiple cooling functions in a single component. According to the company, potential applications include power electronics, battery systems and hydrogen technology.

Technical Implementation
Injection molding allows cooling fins, cooling channels and fluid-carrying lines to be integrated directly into the component structure. Depending on the thermal requirements, both passive and active cooling concepts can be implemented. The plastics used can be designed to be either electrically insulating or conductive, depending on the electrical requirements. This functional integration is intended to reduce the number of separate components as well as subsequent assembly and machining steps.

Costs and Resource Consumption
According to the company, cost savings of up to 20 percent and weight reductions of up to 35 percent are possible compared with equivalent die-cast aluminum solutions. The company attributes these benefits, among other factors, to the reduced number of components and lower assembly and post-processing requirements. The lower weight may also help reduce logistics and operating costs.

Scherdel Wiesauplast also reports potential energy savings of up to 50 percent with the technology. By replacing die-cast aluminum and combining multiple functions in molded plastic components, the company aims to reduce material and energy consumption as well as potentially lower CO₂ emissions. However, the product description does not provide further details on the reference components, operating conditions or calculation methods underlying the stated savings potential.
