The global expansion of data centers and increasing power densities are placing greater demands on cooling systems and electrical infrastructure. At Fakuma 2026 in Friedrichshafen, Ems-Grivory, a business unit of Switzerland-based Ems-Chemie AG, is highlighting potential applications for high-performance polyamides in these areas. Replacing metal parts with injection-molded plastic components is intended to reduce weight and manufacturing complexity. At the same time, multiple functions can be integrated into a single component. Applications include fan impellers for building and rack cooling, control valves and their actuators, pump components, connectors, fittings, cooling lines and parts of electrical switching mechanisms.Air Cooling: 30 Percent Lower Manufacturing Costs in One Application In air cooling, the geometry of fan impellers influences airflow and energy consumption. The design flexibility offered by injection molding enables flow-optimized blade geometries. For a fan impeller made from "Grivory GV" polyamide, the company reports 30 percent lower manufacturing costs, approximately 30 percent lower energy consumption during operation and a 40 percent reduction in weight. These figures relate to a specific application example. Liquid Cooling: Replacing Stainless Steel and Brass As power densities increase, particularly in AI applications, liquid cooling is becoming increasingly important in data centers. Control valves, pumps, fittings and cooling lines come into contact with water-glycol mixtures such as PG25. Plastics used in these applications must maintain their chemical and hydrolytic resistance to the cooling media throughout their service life. According to Ems-Grivory, suitable high-performance polyamides meet these requirements and, depending on the application, can also achieve a UL 94 V-0 flame-retardancy rating. Replacing stainless steel and brass is expected to reduce component weight and assembly effort. Complex components can be manufactured by injection molding, potentially eliminating additional machining and assembly steps. As an example, the company cites a control valve for liquid cooling made from "Grivory HT". Electrical Infrastructure: Functional Integration Through Injection Molding Safety-critical parts of electrical switching mechanisms transmit mechanical forces and must contribute to the reliable disconnection of electrical circuits. This requires high strength, stiffness and dimensional stability. Other requirements include electrical insulation properties, tracking resistance (CTI), and resistance to temperature fluctuations and repeated switching operations. Ems-Grivory describes the replacement of complex steel and aluminum components with injection-molded parts featuring integrated functions. This can reduce downstream machining and assembly steps while enabling larger production volumes with consistent component properties. One example is a switch-disconnector made from "Grivory HT". The company does not provide specific figures for potential cost savings in these electrical components.
