Starlinger: Automatic production of modern shopping bags from woven plastic fabric

Starlinger (www.starlinger.com) introduces on NPE in Chicago the cb*starKON conversion line– the world’s first line for the automatic production of modern shopping bags from woven plastic fabric.

Woven shopping bags are gaining in popularity: no other type of bag meets the increasingly high standards for long life, attractive design and environment-conscious use of resources so well. The only drawback: These bags are all sewn and converted by hand and because of the price they are almost always imported from Asia yet, which means long delivery times, high transport costs, and unnecessary pollution of the environment.

Advert

Starlinger’s cb*starKON now makes industrial production of these bags a profitable enterprise suited to highly developed countries. In a plant producing 40 million shopping bags a year, the cb*starKON pays for itself within a short time - according to manufacturer information.

The CB*STAR® shopping bag is made of a compound of PP fabric and a reverse printed BOPP film. This compound achieves a high degree of strength and the desired stiffness while minimising the weight of the bag. The reverse printed BOPP film protects the printed motif from abrasion and gives the shopping bag a long useful life as an advertising medium.

A new type of adhesive bonds the surfaces in a single process without complicated surface treatment. It hardens quickly at room temperature, thereby saving time and energy. Versatility also speaks for the cb*starKON, which enables producers to support a variety of style choices and to meet demand for short delivery times. Change of bag dimensions is automated, and a wide choice of handle types can be applied automatically or manually.

Life Cycle Assessment

Conventional PE carrier bags are a source of environmental pollution. The CB*STAR® shopping bag, designed to be reusable 100 times, offers important ecological advantages over single-use bags. Changing over to reusable shopping bags reduces both raw material consumption and the accumulation of plastic waste. In addition, shopping bags based on CB*STAR® technology are 100% recyclable.

The use of lightweight yet strong materials lengthens the useful life of the CB*STAR® shopping bag. A conventional LDPE flexiloop shopping bag weighs about 33 g, is designed to hold about 12 kg and is used, on average, 12 times. A paper shopping bag weighs 42 g, holds 8 kg and is suitable for only two uses.

The woven polypropylene CB*STAR® bag weighs about 65 g, holds up to 30 kg and can be reused more than 100 times. Woven fabric lends not only characteristic structure to the bag, but also extraordinary durability, strength and tear-resistance.
