Amcor PET Packaging: PET is impacting all sectors of drinks market

The unveiling of several high profile beer brands in PET bottles and a focus on the many recycling possibilities for PET were the two key highlights of the Amcor PET Packaging Europe/Asia (www.amcor.com) stand at this year’s BRAU Beviale 2004 exhibition (10.-12.11.2004, Nürnberg). In addition, the company showed some of its latest bottle design innovations across its key market sectors such as CSDs, water, juices, dairy and alcoholic drinks.

The new beer bottles will include a 330ml AmGuard™ multi-layer bottle for InBev’s (previously Interbrew) Beck’s Gold brand. The bottle is being introduced into the German market, sold singly and in six packs, and is aimed at the special events sector. The AmGuard™ multi-layer construction features Amcor’s pioneering Bind-Ox™ oxygen scavenging material that has typically shown a shelf life in excess of six months for other beers.

Other major brands packed in new PET bottles will include 1 litre Tuborg bottles for Carlsberg Turkey and Croatia and a 0.5 litre bottle for Hasseröder in Germany.

Amcor PET’s design and technical capabilities were also be showcased in a number of new launches in the juice and sports drink sectors including a 33cl hot fill bottle for Pago, a 1.5 and 1 litre bottle for Tropicana juice and a new 0.33l size Heat Set bottle for Aquarius sports drink. These bottles demonstrate the flexibility of PET to achieve attractive designs to enhance brand image while also providing excellent product protection and extended shelf life.

Another reason for PET’s established popularity across all areas of the drinks trade is its positive environmental profile. In particular, as Amcor has aptly demonstrated at its major recycling facility in Beaune, France, both mono and multi-layer PET – and in amber and other colours as well as clear – can be efficiently and cost-effectively recycled including into food grade resin that can be re-used in drinks packaging, so Amcor says.

As well as graphics and information to demonstrate the recycling proess at Beaune, Amcor was also be showing examples of its multi-layer bottles incorporating up to 25% recycled material.
