PTTGC: New PET recycling plant planned in Ohio

Thai chemical company PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC) is planning to build a PET recycling plant in the US state of Ohio.

According to a press release from U.S. subsidiary PTTGC America (GCA), the complex will be built on land at the Midwest Mega Commerce Center in Fayette County. Located between Cincinnati and Columbus, the site will have capacity for the mechanical recycling of approximately 40,000 tons of PET waste annually. However, no information has yet been provided on the level of investment required or on further details of the project.

GCA CEO Panod Awaiwanond said, "In line with the Paris Agreement, the PTTGC Group has set a target to reduce current CO2 emissions by 20 percent by 2030 to become emissions neutral by 2050. This project illustrates our commitment to combating climate change and promoting a circular economy. It also reinforces our commitment to the U.S. and the state of Ohio."

PTTGC has been planning the development of a new petrochemical complex in eastern Ohio for some time. According to earlier plans, an ethane cracker with capacities for up to 1 million metric tons of ethylene per year is to be built there on a 68-hectare site in Belmont County. In addition, facilities are planned to produce 350,000 metric tons of polyethylene (HDPE), 500,000 metric tons of ethylene glycol (MEG) and 100,000 metric tons of ethylene oxide (EO) per year. Following the departure of former project partner Daelim Chemical and further delays as a result of the Corona pandemic, PTTGC is looking for new partners for the investment project, which is valued at up to ten billion USD.

PTT Global Chemical is a subsidiary of the Thai state-owned oil and gas company PTT. In FY2022, PTTGC recorded an operating profit of THB18.984 billion (€500 million) and a net loss of THB8.752 billion (€230 million) from consolidated sales of THB678.267 billion (€17.852 billion).
