APK: Start of construction on second "Newcycling" plant planned for 2024

The German company APK is planning to start construction work in the new year on its second plant for recycling plastic waste using the "Newcycling" process developed by the company itself.

The company recently announced this in a press release after the project was certified by TÜV Rheinland in recent months in the areas of quality, environmental and energy management in accordance with the relevant ISO standards. In addition, the first supply contracts for recyclates from the new plant have already been concluded.

At the beginning of last year, APK had already secured powerful investors for the construction of the second new recycling plant in the form of the chemical group LyondellBasell (LYB) and the investment company Kirkbi. A total of around 130 million euros is to be made available for the project. In March, the engineering company Afry was also commissioned with the preliminary and design planning of the plant.

The new plant will use the solvent-based "Newcycling" process to produce primarily high-quality LDPE recyclates from mixed plastic waste for the packaging and automotive industries. However, no concrete details have yet been provided regarding the location and planned capacities. However, APK's Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Robert Marx, announced in the current press release that he would provide corresponding information at the beginning of the new year. According to earlier reports, APK is planning a complex with the capacity to recycle around 40,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year.

APK, which was founded in 2008, operates a plastics recycling complex at its headquarters in Merseburg with an input capacity of 12,000 tonnes per year using conventional recycling processes and 8,000 tonnes using the newly developed "Newcycling" process. It produces LDPE pellets under the "Mersalen" brand and polyamide pellets under the "Mersamid" brand. Since 2022, the company has also been operating the "Newcycling Competence Centre" at a former Clariant research and development site in Frankfurt-Höchst for the further development of the company's own recycling technology.
