DuPont: Material-based solutions for medical device manufacturers

DuPont (www.dupont.com) materials for the medical and pharmaceutical industries – from high-performance, medical-grade polymers for the production of medical components to DuPont™ Tyvek® brand protective material for sterile packaging applications – will once more be in evidence during Medtec 09 in Stuttgart, Germany.

Engineering thermoplastics for medical components
Supporting manufacturers of pharmaceuticals and non-implantable medical devices in capturing the performance and cost benefits of its engineering thermoplastics, the DuPont offering includes special control and premium control grades for the healthcare industry which meet the levels of manufacturing control required for healthcare products. Moreover the company provides assistance to customers in polymer selection, tool design, moulding optimization and documentation of compliance of materials and manufacturing controls with regulatory or customer requirements.

Recent examples of the benefits to be gained by designing medical applications with DuPont materials include tray arresters fitted in Medstor medical cabinets from Mailbox Mouldings International Ltd. (Stalybridge, England). They rely on the performance of DuPont™ Delrin® acetal resin – in terms of its strength, flexibility and fatigue resistance – in order to prevent accidental removal of storage trays from cabinets while, simultaneously, allowing them to be extended at an angle for easier retrieval of stock at high levels. Meanwhile, disposable and reusable insulin pens, designed by Industrial Design Consultancy Ltd (IDC) in the UK, contain a number of components moulded from DuPont engineering thermoplastics, which had been selected for their quality and accuracy in dose setting and delivery. A further significant application is the i-LIMB™ Hand – a prosthetic device from Scottish bionic technology company Touch Bionics that replicates the look and feel of the human hand. DuPont™ Zytel® HTN semi-aromatic polyamide is used to protect the sophisticated system of drives and motors within the device by providing extreme impact resistance and dimensional stability without exceeding the required overall weight.

The Science of Protection: Tyvek® for Medical Packaging
Tyvek® brand protective material combines most of the best characteristics of paper, film and fabric in one material, and provides a higher degree of protection for medical devices and supplies than other porous material used for sterile packaging applications.

The secret to the superior performance of Tyvek® is that it’s not a paper, but rather a sheet of flashspun and bonded high-density polyethylene (HDPE) filaments. Continuous strands of very fine, interconnected filaments are multi-directionally oriented and bonded together by heat and pressure during manufacture. The result is a tough, durable sheet structure that provides a unique combination of physical properties and microbial barrier performance that other sterile packaging materials cannot normally match: lightweight yet strong; vapour-permeable yet resistant to water and chemicals; clean peel and low linting; superior tear strength and puncture resistance; and compatibility with all common sterilization methods.

These characteristics make Tyvek® an excellent protective material to withstand high physical stress and microbial penetration challenges, the most important criteria in selecting packaging materials for medical devices.
