At the end of October, the companies of the Schwarz Group — which include Lidl and Kaufland — extended their partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation until 2030 and once again signed the Global Commitment. With this agreement, the Group reaffirms its long-term commitment to a functioning circular economy and strengthened resource sovereignty. As part of the Global Commitment 2030, the Schwarz Group pledges to reduce the use of virgin plastics in its private label plastic packaging by five percent by 2030 compared to 2018. In addition, all single-use private label packaging is to contain 15 percent less virgin material by 2030. These objectives are part of the overarching circular economy strategy “Reset Resources,” which sets out binding Group-wide guidelines for sustainable business practices — from packaging and products to construction, food waste, and materials management. Florian Schütze, Director of Corporate Responsibility at Schwarz Corporate Affairs, emphasized the strategic importance of the circular economy for the Schwarz Group. A functioning circular economy, he said, is a key contribution to global resource security. The new “2030 Plastics Agenda for Business” from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation provides guidance in this regard and enables stronger international collaboration. The partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which began in 2018, connects the Schwarz Group to an international network of more than 300 companies, governments, and organizations. The goal is to jointly develop solutions for a resource-efficient and circular economy, particularly in the area of plastics. One example of the cooperation is Lidl’s circular textile collection, launched in April this year. The collection consists mainly of cellulose-based and recycled materials and is produced according to environmentally friendly production standards. By extending the partnership and expanding its targets for reducing virgin plastics, the Schwarz Group underscores its determination to consistently advance the transition to a resource-conserving circular economy.
