DuBay Polymers: LANXESS and DuPont expand joint PBT polymer production

Chemical companies LANXESS (www.lanxess.com) and DuPont (www.dupont.com) have expanded their PBT polymer production joint venture. More than ten million Euros have been invested by the partner companies in the operation of their joint venture (JV), DuBay Polymer GmbH located in Hamm-Uentrop, Germany.

The plant, which was first commissioned in 2004, is used by both JV parent companies for the production of the base polymer polybutylene terephthalate (PBT). The new investment was used to provide PBT compounding capability for high-volume compounds. Eleven additional positions have been created as a direct consequence of the expansion.

Commenting on the latest investment in the JV, Dr. Richard Mayo, Global Director High Productivity at DuPont Engineering Polymers said: “Today’s announcement reflects the ongoing growth in demand for PBT. By expanding capacity at the facility, which is already one of the world’s most modern production sites, we aim to capture this growth.”

Dr. Hubert Fink, Global Director of the Business Unit Semi-Crystalline Products at LANXESS, stated: “Our cooperation with DuPont has been a success story from the beginning. This latest investment will enable us not only to further improve the cost structure at our joint venture, but also to strengthen its significance as one of the largest production facilities of its kind in the world.”

Both LANXESS and DuPont include PBT in their portfolio of high-performance polymer resins, whereby it is principally used in the automotive and electrical and electronic industries, for example, for headlamp bezels or distribution houses. The material is characterized by its high heat resistance, stiffness and strength, as well as its excellent anti-friction properties, high abrasion resistance, low moisture absorption and good electronic properties.
