The chemical company Trinseo is planning further measures to streamline and optimize its production in Europe. According to the press release, this will involve discontinuing the production of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and its precursor, acetone cyanohydrin (ACH), in Italy. The closure of the MMA complex at the Rho site near Milan and the ACH plant in Porto Marghera near Venice is already planned by the end of the current year. However, Trinseo intends to continue the production of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) in Rho, with the necessary raw materials to be sourced from third-party suppliers in the future. Furthermore, the company is considering discontinuing the production of polystyrene (PS) at its site in Schkopau, Germany. According to the current announcement, an information and consultation process has already been initiated with the works council of the German subsidiary regarding this. The company's remaining PS production is to be concentrated at its Tessenderlo site in Belgium. Overall, Trinseo expects the restructuring in Europe to result in annual earnings improvements of approximately $30 million. Trinseo CEO Frank Bozich explained: "These plans are a result of the ongoing challenges that we and our competitors in the European chemical industry have been facing for several years, including weak end-market demand, high energy prices, and increasing imports from Asia. These decisions are never easy. We are aware that each one has an impact on the livelihoods of our colleagues and their families. As with any restructuring during this unprecedented crisis, our primary focus is on the safety of our colleagues and a respectful transition." Trinseo, registered in Luxembourg, is headquartered in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, USA, and produces a wide range of plastics based on styrene and acrylic, as well as polycarbonates, polypropylene, latex binders, and other engineered plastics. The company employs a total of around 3,100 people worldwide at 22 production and eleven R&D sites. For the first six months of the 2025 fiscal year, Trinseo reported an operating loss of $62 million and a net loss of $185 million on revenues of $1.569 billion. More information: www.trinseo.com |
