Rowasol: New Bio-Based Liquid Colors for Plastics Applications

Rowasol GmbH is expanding its portfolio of liquid colors for plastics processing with the launch of its new “Rowasol GreenLine” range. According to the company, the formulations are based on bio-based raw materials and have been developed specifically for plastics applications.

The carrier system already contains more than 75% renewable raw materials, Rowasol says. The formulations also incorporate selected colorants of plant origin. To make these natural colorants suitable for the thermal conditions encountered during plastics processing, they are embedded in a natural mineral. This approach is designed to improve their thermal stability.

The current colorant portfolio includes materials derived from indigo, curcumin and radish extracts. It also features a black colorant based on plant-derived carbon as well as a white colorant of mineral origin. The range therefore covers a variety of shades for bio-based plastics applications.

According to Rowasol, the liquid colors have been tested in different bioplastics at dosage levels ranging from 0.5% to 2.0%. The trials showed that the polymer matrix has a significant impact on the resulting color appearance. More intense shades were achieved in an almost transparent biopolymer, while a white, opaque material produced softer, pastel-like tones. The tests also indicate that clearly visible coloration can be achieved at relatively low dosage levels.

The company says it is continuing to explore additional natural sources of colorants while also working to further increase the bio-based content of the carrier system. The objective is to broaden the available color spectrum and raise the proportion of renewable raw materials used in the formulations.

The development is particularly relevant as manufacturers of bio-based and resource-efficient plastics increasingly assess not only the polymer itself, but also additives and colorants in terms of their raw material origin. For industrial applications, however, a key requirement remains whether bio-based color systems can deliver the necessary thermal stability, dosing performance and reproducible color results under standard processing conditions.
