French compounder Benvic will present an internally developed life cycle assessment (LCA) platform at Fakuma 2026. The application is designed to model the carbon footprint and other environmental impacts of different compound formulations as early as the material selection and product development stages. This will allow environmental indicators to be considered alongside costs and technical properties when selecting materials.Assessment of Formulations and Recycled Content According to the company, its portfolio comprises several thousand formulations across different polymer groups, including compounds containing post-consumer and post-industrial recyclates as well as bio-based materials. Benvic states that the platform can analyse almost all formulations in its portfolio. Variations in recycled content, colour and composition can also be assessed to identify differences in environmental performance at an early stage. The analysis is also intended to identify environmental hotspots across the process steps considered and highlight opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, the company does not provide specific calculation examples, details of the impact categories assessed or the system boundaries used in its models. Combining LCA and Environmental Product Declarations The calculations are based on life cycle assessment methodology. An LCA evaluates environmental impacts within defined system boundaries across specified stages of a material's or product's life cycle. The results can serve as a basis for Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). EPDs document environmental indicators according to established rules and are verified by independent third parties. Benvic intends to combine its internal modelling with verified EPDs. While the platform is primarily designed to compare material alternatives during the early stages of development, EPDs provide verified environmental data for defined products. Modelled results therefore cannot automatically be regarded as equivalent to independently verified product declarations. According to Marta Fernández, Sustainability Director of the Benvic Group, customers are increasingly requesting such data during the initial design phase of new components. This trend is driven, among other factors, by requirements relating to sustainability reporting, ecodesign and digital product passports. Which forms of documentation are mandatory depends on the product category and applicable regulations. Sustainability Rating and Trade Fair Presence In 2025, Benvic received the Platinum rating from EcoVadis, placing it among the top one percent of companies assessed by the organisation. This rating evaluates sustainability management at the corporate level and does not replace a material-specific life cycle assessment.
