Untha: New Single-Shaft Shredder for Processing Difficult-to-Shred Plastic Waste

Austrian machinery manufacturer Untha is expanding its product range with the new "MR" series of single-shaft shredders. The newly introduced "MR1800C Pro" model is designed for difficult-to-shred production and recycling waste as well as continuous multi-shift operation. The machine is aimed primarily at plastics processors, compounders, recycling companies and industrial operators.

Wide Range of Input Materials
The shredder is designed to process thick-walled plastic sprues, start-up lumps, large-diameter pipes, profiles and molded parts, as well as compacted film bales, without the need for upstream pre-shredding. According to additional information provided by the company, the range of suitable materials also includes highly reinforced glass- and carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (GFRP and CFRP), technical components made of PA and POM, rubber and tires, technical textiles, PA nonwovens, strapping bands, mattresses, foams and large hollow objects such as IBC containers. Actual suitability and performance depend on the material and machine configuration.

Cutting System and Performance Data
According to the company, the designation "MR" is used internally for the new "M" series. The number 1800 refers to the rotor length of 1,800 mm, while the "C" identifies the cutting system featuring pointed, square cutter blades. According to Untha, "Pro" denotes the fully equipped version. A simpler basic version is mentioned as a possible future addition.

The cutting system can be configured with one to three rows of knives and between 35 and 101 cutting teeth. The rotor knives can be used on four sides, while the main and secondary cutting bars can be reused multiple times. Bolted knife holders and an adjustable cutting gap allow the system to be adapted to different material streams. Depending on the configuration, the drive power ranges from 90 to 110 kW. Untha specifies a throughput of 2 to 8 t/h, depending on the material and screen used. According to the latest product announcement, particle sizes ranging from 10 mm to 60 mm can be achieved.

Drive System, Material Feeding and Maintenance
The beltless "Untha Power Drive" direct drive system consists of an asynchronous motor, a planetary gearbox and a maintenance-free safety coupling. The latter is designed to protect the cutting system and drivetrain from damage caused by foreign objects. An externally mounted pusher ram with claws and automatic control feeds even bulky materials towards the rotor, allowing the full width of the feed opening to be utilized.

A hydraulically operated service flap provides easier access to the cutting chamber for knife replacement, cleaning and the removal of foreign objects. The screen basket can be lowered hydraulically and consists of three identical, individually replaceable segments. According to the manufacturer, the screen can be changed by one person in approximately 15 minutes. The machine is operated via a 7-inch touchscreen. The "MyUntha" customer portal and the "Untha Genius" assistance system provide access to real-time machine data, maintenance functions and a 3D spare parts catalog.

Award at Fakuma 2026
Untha Deutschland GmbH received first place in the Recycling category of the inaugural "Fakuma Innovation Award" for the "MR1800C Pro". The award ceremony took place on October 12, 2026, as part of Fakuma 2026 in Friedrichshafen, Germany. Awards were presented in a total of six categories.
