FKuR Kunststoff: Compostable and heat resistant injection moulding material made out of cellulose

The Biograde 300A injection moulding material developed by FKuR Kunststoff GmbH, Willich, in co-operation with Fraunhofer Institut UMSICHT, Oberhausen, is now also certified as a compostable material according to DIN EN 13 432 and DIN Certco.

FKuR Kunststoff GmbH has been developing and producing biologically degradable plastics out of renewable materials. The company has so far offered two different product groups to the market: Biograde grades for injection moulding and Bio-Flex grades for film applications. Biograde Compounds are innovative Cellulose blends. An excellent compromise has been reached with these blends between the conflicting requirements of compostability on one hand and high heat distortion temperature on the other.

Despite compostability, Biograde formulations have a heat distortion temperature of up to 129°C (Vicat A). Common biopolymers generally fail at temperatures above 65°C. With the trade name Biograde 300A, the compound has been recently registered as a compostable material at DIN Certco (certification number 7W0072) and is thereby fully compostable according to DIN EN 13432. Biograde 300A is additionally characterised by noteworthy mechanical values that are comparable with those for standard polystyrene.

Biograde 300A may be processed without difficulty on standard injection moulding machines with universal screws. The proportion of renewable material amounts to more than 60%. Direct contact of Biograde 300A with food has been confirmed by declaration of harmlessness issued by an independent test institute. Applications for Biograde 300A range from catering articles such as for example cutlery or plates through to technical parts. In the catering area, the World Youth Day 2005 in Cologne was equipped with cutlery (Photo) made out of Biograde 300A.

Under the motto “Plastics – made by nature” FKuR Kunststoff GmbH develops biologically degradable and natural fibre reinforced plastics in co﷓operation with Fraunhofer Institut UMSICHT, Oberhausen. FKuR Kunststoff GmbH takes care of the exclusive production and sales of the Nature-Compounds.
