Hellweg: Getting blown film into shape with a sharp cut

Film cutters Hellweg Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG are used in blown film lines in the production of blown film out of, for example HD-PE, LD-PE, LLD-PE etc., to cut laid flat film or fabricate it into strips.

The actual cutting of the tubular film tubing takes place with commercially available blades with high sharpness and long service life, which are introduced into bushings in the film cutter housing, where they are additionally held by magnets. The low maintenance film cutters are equipped with quick change devices which enable changing of the blades during the production.

The tubular film is laid flat at the end of the blown film line, tightened on rolls and fed to the film winding station, where the type A film cutters (picture 1+2) are attached to linear guides alongside the hauled off film strip so that they may be moved as required. The cutters reach into the tubular film, which runs over guiding rolls made of stainless steel and over a chromium plated guide wedge, that may be coated with ceramic material as an option, ensuring controlled and smooth guiding of the film. The film cutters are held under mechanical tension from the side, so that the laid flat film remain tight. The guiding rolls are provided with a small slot, in which the blade reaches from the outside, preventing sideways slipping of the blade, and it cuts the tubular film into two film webs lying on top of each other, which are subsequently wound separately. A protective cover prevents inadvertent contact with the blade.

The type A film cutters are optionally fitted with a connection for compressed air, through which compressed air is fed continuously via five air nozzles mounted at the front. This blows film apart that has adhered to itself.

The type F film cutters (picture 2) are suited for lateral seaming, cutting of middle strips and determining film width when producing film on narrow spools. For this purpose, the cutters are mounted on linear guides in front of the running film web, so that the blades reach the passing film and cut it.
