WIS Kunststoffe GmbH is set to present a polypropylene regranulate made from post-consumer recyclate (rPP-PCR) for food-contact applications at Fakuma 2026. According to the company, the recycling process used for the material meets the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2022/1616 governing recycled plastics intended for food contact.During the trade fair, the material will be processed into a drinking cup containing 11% PCR on an Engel “victory 210/50 tech” injection molding machine. The mold used for the demonstration was supplied by Manfred Schägner GmbH of Steinmauern, Germany. The application is intended to demonstrate that mechanically recycled polypropylene from controlled input streams can also be used in contact-sensitive packaging applications. WIS claims to be the first German regranulate producer with a recycling process for drinking cups that complies with the relevant European requirements. This claim is based on information provided by the company and is not further substantiated in the announcement by an independent certification body. The use of post-consumer recyclates in food packaging is becoming increasingly important from a regulatory perspective. Under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (EU) 2025/40, contact-sensitive plastic packaging made from materials other than PET will generally be required to contain at least 10% recycled content from 2030. Compliance is assessed on the basis of the annual average per manufacturing plant. With an rPP-PCR content of 11%, the cup planned for Fakuma 2026 would therefore exceed the target for this packaging category. WIS says it has expanded its production of PCR regranulates in recent years. The company produces recycled materials for packaging, consumer goods and technical components, and also offers grades approved for food-contact and automotive applications. For regulated end uses in particular, WIS identifies consistent material properties, reproducible quality and traceability as key requirements. “Schneckenputzer” Purging Compound Alongside its rPP-PCR material, WIS will also showcase its “Schneckenputzer” purging compound at Fakuma 2026. Designed for cleaning screws and barrels in plastics processing machinery, the material combines mechanical, chemical and physical cleaning mechanisms, according to the company. Mechanical components are intended to loosen deposits through friction, while chemically active ingredients act on residual polymer and help detach it from machine surfaces. The purging compound also expands during use, enabling it to reach less accessible areas and carry out loosened residues. According to WIS, the product contains no abrasive glass fibers. The company says the material is designed to reduce the amount of material required for cleaning while shortening machine downtime and minimizing scrap.
